McConaghy History
McConaghy boats was founded by John McConaghy in 1967, building 12, 16, and 18 foot skiffs, Tornado and A - class catamarans, Moths and other high performance dinghies. Early boats were built of plywood, but McConaghy engineered and perfected the vacuum formed foam sandwich, fiberglass/ Kevlar construction method, which proved an immediate success.
As the companies reputation grew, McConaghys research and development into pre - preg composite construction techniques became the finest in the world. McConaghy boats expansion led the move to its current site at Mona Vale in Sydney in 1989, enabling us to produce hulls, masts, steering systems and foils for yachts successfully competing in the America's Cup, Kenwood Cup, Maxi Worlds, Admirals cup, Whitbread /Volvo and round the world record breaking Multihull races.
With this detailed understanding of composite construction, McConaghys has developed and supplied specialized components to the military, aeronautical industry and Formula 1 teams, and with the company expanding to open a facility in China, the fastest, lightest and strongest boats in the world, from foiling Moth Dinghies to Volvo 70 Yachts are emerging from McConaghys.
In 2000, senior in house project managers Jon Morris and Mark Evans, joined John McConaghy & Steve Moxham as partners in the business, allowing John McConaghy to step back from his role as principal manager of the company, whilst retaining the role as an active consultant, ensuring forty years of knowledge base, continuity and excellence is maintained.
With a current combined team of 170 staff, McConaghy continues to build strong, light and fast boats, meeting the budget and time demands of yacht owners and designers. Which is why McConaghy builds 3.4m foiling Moth Dinghies, record breaking 30 Meter Maxis and everything in between.
